Basic Lighting and Grip Workshop

Nov. 2 & 3, 2012 - Tulsa, Oklahoma

Join award-winning photographer/filmmaker Todd Roberts in his Basic Lighting & Grip Workshop for video and still photography. This intensive, interactive workshop is designed for filmmakers, documentarians, corporate video producers and photographers who want to improve their knowledge of lighting with continuous-output instruments. We will not be using studio flash or speedlights.

The workshop is divided into two sessions. 

Session One - Friday, November 2, 6pm - 10pm

Session One will cover principles of light used in everyday production situations. We will focus on lighting faces for an interview, presentation, portrait or dramatic situation.

Topics include:

• Inverse square law of light
• Angle of reflectance equals angle of incidence
• Creating light and shadow
• Broad light and short light
• Lighting foreground, subject and background
• Color temperature and correction
• Mixing ambient light
• Intro to grip equipment

Session Two - Saturday, November 3, 8am - 4pm

In Session Two, participants will receive intensive hands on training with many different types of lights and light modifiers and see the effects of soft boxes, umbrellas, light panels, scrims, snoots, reflectors, gobos and barn doors. Weather permitting, we will also do some work outside.

Topics include:

• Intro to lights and lighting control or modifiers
• Rembrant lighting 
• Three-point lighting
• Beauty lighting
• Clamshell lighting
• Sports lighting
• Hands-on experience in different situations (bulk of the session)
• Homemade lighting (shop lights and flashlights)

Volunteer Models and Actors

We will light models and actors as our subjects. Participants, please share your photos and footage with the subjects.

All types of people from the most glamorous models to the roughest character actors are wanted. If you would like to volunteer as a subject, please email casting@startpictures.com and attach your headshot.

Volunteer Production Assistants

Depending on our attendance, we may need additional production assistants. If you're interested, please email casting@startpictures.com and include "PA" in the subject line.

What to bring 

Required: Comfortable closed-toe shoes (no sandals, flip-flops, etc. for safety reasons)

Optional: Your still or video camera, lenses, lights, stands, fully charged batteries, media cards and any other gear you may want to play with. You may bring your own models if you like.

Meals

Friday evening: Pizza, water and soft drinks. This will be good for those coming directly from work.

Saturday morning: Assorted cold breakfast foods, coffee, tea, water and soda. This is a working breakfast so we will not waste a moment of learning.

Saturday during the day: Snacks and drinks throughout the day

Saturday lunch: Sandwiches and salads. This is a working lunch to grab as you have time within the hands-on section.

 About the Instructor 

Todd Roberts has been working in photography, video, television and film production for three decades. Based near Tulsa, Oklahoma, Todd has traveled many parts of the world for assignments. He has created over 400 episodes of outdoor television and over 300 corporate videos and commercials for clients such as American Express, Audi, BSA, Freightliner, Swarovski Optik, Volkswagen, Walmart and Winnebago.

Todd is currently owner of Start Pictures and has won numerous awards for his commercial, television and documentary work.
